Description
A Pair of Queen Anne Carved Walnut Trifid Foot Side Chairs
Attributed to William Savery, Philadelphia, Circa 1750
one example with front seat rail and slip seat marked V, the other with the front rail marked II with slip seat marked IIII.
Height 39 1/4 inches.
Property from the Collection of Mr. R. Neall Distad, Cleveland Heights, Ohio
Condition
In overall fine and stable condition. Retains an even, mellow patina, though likely refinished many years ago. Scuffs, marks and scratches consistent with age and use. Age cracks visible in areas, but none that cause concern for structural integrity. One retaining the original slip seat and the other appears to be original to the set, but from one of the other chairs. Corner blocks replaced. The example with the matched seat shows repairs at the crest rail at the junction with the stiles, cracked, pinned and reglued. The other example shows a small patch to the back of the proper back left leg where it meets the rear seat rail, suggesting some repair. Knee returns are replaced, some earlier than others.
